The concept of mental health is gradually gaining importance in the maritime industry. There is a growing awareness about the higher rates of mental problems and suicides of seafarers, compared to land workers. However, talking about mental health might not be easy. There are many reasons lying behind this issue, such as fear of judgement and concerns of losing the job. On the other hand, talking about mental health has many benefits. To exemplify, if we talk about mental health, we can increase trust and communication by providing a caring and safe environment, which in turn encourages better communication and decision-making; since it is unacceptable for seafarers to feel insecure or helpless on the job. These webinars aim to help seafarers and companies to start talking about mental health and developing mutual understanding.
